Helping Homeless Community of Houston
By Ghazal Bombaywala-volunteer
I woke up to the sounds of the pouring rain outside of my window. I told myself that no matter what, I will
do everything in my power to make sure the volunteers show up this morning at the Star of Hope T.L.C.
Today was the Humanitarian Day event. I was on my way; the rain was getting harder and harder. This did
not stop us. As the volunteers had started to arrive, each booth was being set up. All of the volunteers were
ready for a day of generosity and enjoyment.
As the event was being prepared and the guests started arriving, the rain started to slow down, the children
began to come for the fun booth, and cameras started appearing. As the children started to appear, so did
the parents and the food.
As one of the young volunteers in Houston, I realized what a great tradition The House of Charity of
bringing hot meals, providing Hygiene packs, giving out school supplies, and offering some fun activities to
the local homeless community. They are also keeping the love, care, respect, and dignity of the Houstonian
residents. The House of Charity has placed all of their efforts into providing high quality life essentials. They
were founded in 1997. The organization offers high quality donated medical care and life essentials to
improve life and health of impoverished children and young adults in America and around the Globe. Since
inception, The House of Charity has provided aid to over 150,000.
Star of Hope has been so gracious in working with The House of Charity in holding Humanitarian Day on
their lot. They have been God's answer to the prayers of Houston's homeless since 1907. They minister to
more than 900 men, woman, and children every day with food, clothing, shelter, and structured recovery
programs. Through Emrgency Shelters and Transitional Living Centers, Star of Hope touches the lives of
more than 7,000 different homeless people each year-including over 1,600 children.
In all of the areas, items were donated by local residents. Many items were donated at a local grocery store,
The following items were donated: back packs, blankets, towels, shampoo, tooth brush and tooth paste,
mouth wash, soap, deodorant, hand sanitizer, toys, school supplies, rice, sugar, dry milk, beans, soft drinks,
and snack items.
Today is not only about helping members of the homeless community, but it is also about providing safe and
healthy volunteer opportunity to us young members. The volunteers there selves donate over 23,520 hours
every year. That's almost $250, 000 worth of free work. Many of the volunteers are under the age of 18.
The House of Charity has taken in charge of distributing the hygiene packs to the homeless shelters in
Houston and Galveston.
Many do not understand the hard work and effort that goes into putting an idea that was just a plain
suggestion into an actual project. Humanitarian Day was put together by The House of Charity and the
dedicated and committed volunteers, we salute our volunteers.
